Hawaii, Maui, Haleakala National Park

Being a recreation and leisure studies major in college, I've always enjoyed national and state parks. Hawaii has so many national parks to enjoy! On our way into Hana (after the long drive) we stopped at Waianapanapa State Park.

We walked to the Waianapanapa Caves where legend has it that a king once murdered his wife when she was hiding from him. Every year, millions of shrimp come in and turn the water red which the legend says it a testimony to this tragedy.

The black sand beach was gorgeous!

I was here!

We were able to walk into this cave and watch the waves come in.

Then we climbed through a space in the rocks and sat on the outside of the cave. The waves sounded like thunder when they crashed into the cave. The sound reminded me of Thunder Hole at Acadia National Park.

We loved using my Gorillapod on this trip! I recommend it to anyone!!

The next day we headed to the coastal side of Haleakala National Park but on the way we drove by this beautiful waterfall so we had to stop to take pictures!

Here's a great group shot!

Val found a path that led down to the waterfall where we saw a man and his son jump in and swim under the waterfall. We decided that we should too so we all (except Mrs. Anne) jumped into the FREEZING cold water and swam under and next to this beautiful waterfall. For my next trip to Hawaii (hint, hint Josh...), I want to buy a waterproof camera so that I can take it with me under the waterfall. Kimberly and Val were able to get some amazing pictures with theirs!!

We finally made it to the park.

On the way to the seven sacred pools, we wandered off the path a little and saw breathtaking views of the coast and the lava rocks.

On our way back to the path, Mrs. Anne slipped so Kimberly and Val stayed with her to rest for a while. Amber and I kept going to the pools.

In order to swim in the highest pool, we had to hike/climb around and over rocks along the side of the pools. Some spots were very narrow to walk by like this place Amber is right here...

The view from the highest pool was worth the hike though and we were able to climb up and sit behind this waterfall! Next time I will have my waterproof camera to take pictures of the view.

Here is proof that we swam!

Mrs. Anne actually sprained her ankle and we found out after we hiked back to where we left them that she needed to be checked out at the hospital just in case so we spent the afternoon close to our rental house checking out a swimming pool across the street from us.

The next morning, we woke up around 1:30 am so that we could drive up to the summit and watch the sunrise! The road to Hana is not as fun and scenic this early in the morning when we know that we are on a time schedule. I helped us pass the time by suggesting road trip games to play :)

We made it on time and the summit was packed with people wanting to see the sunrise. It was absolutely freezing out there! I was wearing two pairs of pants, a t-shirt and a long sleeve shirt AND had a blanket wrapped around me and was still shivering! I didn't think any place in Hawaii could be that cold but there are a few!

This sunrise was worth the cold early morning though.

When the sun started rising, I couldn't think of anything besides the fact that the sunrise was breathtaking and God is amazing.

Once the sun was up, we could see so much of the island!

Pennington Balloon Festival

On August 6th and 7th, I went to the Balloon Festival in Baton Rouge! There were the festival must-haves such as the food vendors selling funnel cakes, turkey on a stick, coconut shrimp on a stick and many other foods that have no nutritional value at all,,,,, there were festival games such as a rock climbing wall and an inflatable human hamster ball thing.... and then there were the balloons!! Yummy!!! Josh was really into taking pictures as well It's starting to fill up!! Both nights were supposed to start with a mass ascension but they couldn't go up either night due to storm clouds being within a certain distance from the field. The highlight of both nights though was the balloon glow! We got to watch 20-30 hot air balloons fill up with air and then the announcer synchronized their fire lighting so that the field was filled with the lights from the balloons at once and then the balloons would all randomly flick their lights on and off. Both were so beautiful and t...

Biking around Acadia

Last week, Josh, his brother, Matt and I drove up to Acadia National Park to bike around. I had been to Acadia before two years ago and loved it so I was excited to go again. A cool thing to know about Acadia is that most of the park is not accessible by car. The major highlights of the park like Thunder Hole and the top of Cadillac Mountain are, but the Carriage Trail includes many trails around lakes and along the coast that are only for biking, hiking or horseback. We were able to go along two of these trails during our 4 hour bike rental from Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop. The first trail we took was around Witch Hunt pond which you can see behind super strong Josh and Matt in the picture above. It looks like a great place to find moose early or late in the day! Even though we were riding around in the middle of the afternoon, it wasn't very hot out at all! The Georgia girl in me was so surprised that I wasn't dripping sweat outside in July but we had delightful weather and delig...

Potato Blossom Festival- Fort Fairfield, Maine

For the weekend of July 15-17 of this year I was able to experience the Maine Potato Blossom Festival! It was so much fun!! There were all of your typical festival activities like crafts, festival food carts, a 5K race, and a parade, but there were also events that I hadn't seen before like a human chess game (I was the white queen!) and a canoe race (couldn't take my camera along because the Saunders boys would have soak it). I was only able to take pictures during the parade but hopefully this gives you a snapshot of all of the fun that the festival had in store for us! The Saunders family loves watching the parade! There were tractors galore!! The governor of Maine, Paul LePage and a senator, Olympia Snowe walked in the parade! (In this picture, the governor had just darted to the left to shake more hands) and yes he shook my hand too! Matt wasn't as lucky :( But those clowns loved Matt! You can let that he was loving this picture too!! I liked this ne...
