Biking around Acadia

Last week, Josh, his brother, Matt and I drove up to Acadia National Park to bike around. I had been to Acadia before two years ago and loved it so I was excited to go again. A cool thing to know about Acadia is that most of the park is not accessible by car. The major highlights of the park like Thunder Hole and the top of Cadillac Mountain are, but the Carriage Trail includes many trails around lakes and along the coast that are only for biking, hiking or horseback. We were able to go along two of these trails during our 4 hour bike rental from Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop.

The first trail we took was around Witch Hunt pond which you can see behind super strong Josh and Matt in the picture above. It looks like a great place to find moose early or late in the day!

Even though we were riding around in the middle of the afternoon, it wasn't very hot out at all! The Georgia girl in me was so surprised that I wasn't dripping sweat outside in July but we had delightful weather and delightful temperatures all afternoon!

I forgot to ninja kick in the above picture like Matt did...

Here's a view of the town of the ocean from the trail.

I guess I was stopping to take pictures too much so Matt decided to climb a tree while he waited...

Here are some shots that I took with my phone while riding down a hill. I couldn't see the shots I was getting but I just pointed my camera towards the beautiful scenery and pushed the button several times....just like all professional photographers I'm sure...

Josh and Matt were more concerned with speed than I was so this was my view for most of the day. If you look closely you can see Josh way up in the distance.

The second trail we explored was the loop around Eagle Lake. More gorgeous views that I could have sat and stared at for hours.

Josh and Matt wouldn't have let me do that though! Matt decided to add to the scenery with his perfect handstand.

Let's just say that I'm glad my camera has a fast shutter speed!

Eagle Lake was so pretty and I was impressed how fast we biked around the whole lake! That part of the trail was 6.6 miles long and it took us about an hour. Of course Josh and Matt would have gone faster without me probably and I would have gone slower and taken twice as many pictures without them!

On the way out, we parked our bikes and walked below a cool bridge that we rode over to start the Carriage Trail.

In the picture above, Josh and Matt are debating to see who can run up the stairs faster...

After we rode back to Bar Harbor, we used up the last of our bike rental time by riding to the coast and sitting for a while.

To top off the already great day, we ate fresh lobster rolls and headed home!

Swimming with Sharks!! Oahu, Hawaii

As we were sitting on our balcony watching sea turtles swim one morning, we decided that it would be awesome to swim with sharks! Oahu's north shore is a great place to see them so we called and made a reservation with North Shore Shark Adventures. The only time available was 6:00am which meant that we needed to leave our hotel by 4:30 to get to the other side of the island but we decided to go for it! This was our view for the ride out! We went 3 miles offshore and then went into the water inside this cage... Amber and I are ready to be shark bait...ooh ha ha Here's our view of the coast from our diving site! We were able to see a beautiful sunrise on the ride out!  Our snorkeling gear was awesome! Climbing into the cage!! Once we got in the cage, they unhooked the cage from the boat and let it drift out about 20 yards so that we could see the sharks from all directions! We saw about 5 Galapagos sharks and 1 reef sh...

Hawaii, Maui, Road to Hana

I am planning to blog about my recent trip to Hawaii in a series of posts. There was so much to see and do that I do not think one post would do justice so I'm starting at the beginning! I went to Hawaii with a friend and co-teacher from school, her sister, her sister's friend and her sister's friend's mom. Confused yet? From now on they will be Amber, Kimberly, Val and Ms. Anne. We flew into Maui pretty late the first night so we stayed in a hotel near the airport. Amber left her wallet at home so she didn't travel with us, found the next set of flights to Hawaii and met back up with us at noon the next day. This was wonderful because we were all so tired and had a lazy morning before picking Amber up. Palm trees were everywhere and they were beautiful! The weather was awesome perfect for the entire week that I was there!! It was so cool to see mountains and beach so close together! It was pretty windy by the water so I had to hold onto my hat! Hawaii, Maui, Haleakala National Park

Being a recreation and leisure studies major in college, I've always enjoyed national and state parks. Hawaii has so many national parks to enjoy! On our way into Hana (after the long drive) we stopped at Waianapanapa State Park. We walked to the Waianapanapa Caves where legend has it that a king once murdered his wife when she was hiding from him. Every year, millions of shrimp come in and turn the water red which the legend says it a testimony to this tragedy. The black sand beach was gorgeous! I was here!   We were able to walk into this cave and watch the waves come in. Then we climbed through a space in the rocks and sat on the outside of the cave. The waves sounded like thunder when they crashed into the cave. The sound reminded me of Thunder Hole at Acadia National Park.  We loved using my Gorillapod on this trip! I recommend it to anyone!! The next day we headed to the coastal side of Haleakala National Park...
