Potato Blossom Festival- Fort Fairfield, Maine

For the weekend of July 15-17 of this year I was able to experience the Maine Potato Blossom Festival! It was so much fun!! There were all of your typical festival activities like crafts, festival food carts, a 5K race, and a parade, but there were also events that I hadn't seen before like a human chess game (I was the white queen!) and a canoe race (couldn't take my camera along because the Saunders boys would have soak it). I was only able to take pictures during the parade but hopefully this gives you a snapshot of all of the fun that the festival had in store for us!

There were tractors galore!!


The governor of Maine, Paul LePage and a senator, Olympia Snowe walked in the parade! (In this picture, the governor had just darted to the left to shake more hands) and yes he shook my hand too! Matt wasn't as lucky :(


But those clowns loved Matt! You can let that he was loving this picture too!!


I liked this next picture of Josh and Matt swaying their hips with Elvis!!


This was my favorite float I think- beauty queens riding tractors that are on an 18-wheeler. Classic!


We got some great free stuff like hats, stress balls in the shape of a potato and these Lay's potato chips!!


The Potato Blossom Festival was a highlight of my trip to Maine this summer and I hope I'm lucky enough to go again next year!!

Swimming with Sharks!! Oahu, Hawaii

As we were sitting on our balcony watching sea turtles swim one morning, we decided that it would be awesome to swim with sharks! Oahu's north shore is a great place to see them so we called and made a reservation with North Shore Shark Adventures. The only time available was 6:00am which meant that we needed to leave our hotel by 4:30 to get to the other side of the island but we decided to go for it! This was our view for the ride out! We went 3 miles offshore and then went into the water inside this cage... Amber and I are ready to be shark bait...ooh ha ha Here's our view of the coast from our diving site! We were able to see a beautiful sunrise on the ride out!  Our snorkeling gear was awesome! Climbing into the cage!! Hawaii, Maui, Road to Hana

I am planning to blog about my recent trip to Hawaii in a series of posts. There was so much to see and do that I do not think one post would do justice so I'm starting at the beginning! I went to Hawaii with a friend and co-teacher from school, her sister, her sister's friend and her sister's friend's mom. Confused yet? From now on they will be Amber, Kimberly, Val and Ms. Anne. We flew into Maui pretty late the first night so we stayed in a hotel near the airport. Amber left her wallet at home so she didn't travel with us, found the next set of flights to Hawaii and met back up with us at noon the next day. This was wonderful because we were all so tired and had a lazy morning before picking Amber up. Palm trees were everywhere and they were beautiful! Hawaii, Maui, Haleakala National Park

Being a recreation and leisure studies major in college, I've always enjoyed national and state parks. Hawaii has so many national parks to enjoy! On our way into Hana (after the long drive) we stopped at Waianapanapa State Park. We walked to the Waianapanapa Caves where legend has it that a king once murdered his wife when she was hiding from him. Every year, millions of shrimp come in and turn the water red which the legend says it a testimony to this tragedy. The black sand beach was gorgeous! I was here!   We were able to walk into this cave and watch the waves come in. Then we climbed through a space in the rocks and sat on the outside of the cave. The waves sounded like thunder when they crashed into the cave. The sound reminded me of Thunder Hole at Acadia National Park.  We loved using my Gorillapod on this trip! I recommend it to anyone!! The next day we headed to the coastal side of Haleakala National Park...
